Flue-cured tobacco is dried with heat directed from flues or pipes that extend from a furnace into the barn. Flue-cured tobacco is grown in Virginia and Eastern North Carolina, where we’re located and as a consequence, we are able to source leaves directly from local farmers. Flue-cured tobacco are bright and have golden in color.
Burley is a larger plant than the flue-cured tobacco and it's 'air-cured’ by hanging in structures with a roof, but with open sides to allow air to freely circulate. Mainly grown in Kentucky and Tennessee, burley leaves are light brown in color. These areas also grow a specific type of burley tobacco, Dark Fired tobacco is a darker mahogany color.
Cigar Leaf is a fire-cured tobacco. Small fires are built on the floor of enclosed barns similar to those used for flue-curing. Cigar leaves used by Artisan Leaf primarily come from the Dominican Republic. The type we use are specifically grown as "wrapper" leaves, or the outer layer of a hand rolled cigar. They are the most standardized of our leaf types in terms of size, shape and color. Cigar Leaf are dark brown to umber.
